Elxius Upgrades Global Network to Achieve 400G with Converged Optical Routing Architecture by Juniper Networks

Telxius, a global leader in connectivity solutions, is expanding its core and edge network infrastructure to 400G with a converged optical routing architecture (CORA) provided by Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), a leader in secure AI-driven networking. This upgrade will facilitate simplified network capacity expansion and optimized connectivity for metropolitan networks and data center interconnections. It will provide connectivity over distances of approximately 100 km to points of presence (PoPs) across Telxius’ network in Spain, the Americas, and throughout Europe.

Telxius connects millions of customers worldwide, offering a wide range of capacity services, colocation, security, and direct internet connectivity via its Tier 1 IP network. Its extensive ecosystem integrates fiber-optic submarine cables and terrestrial links spanning over 100,000 km, with nearly 100 PoPs in 17 countries and 27 data centers. Telxius provides customers with ultra-high capacity, low latency, and a resilient network.

Telxius will migrate a significant portion of its key architecture to CORA and Juniper’s PTX packet transport routers to deliver a robust network with space savings, superior performance, and automated operations. This migration will unlock substantial reserved bandwidth and enable flexible expansion to 400G capacity. The project aims to enhance connectivity for Telxius’ customers and establish a more sustainable architecture, optimizing network scalability and bandwidth efficiency.

The solution leverages advanced technology, including IP over dense wavelength division multiplexing (IPoDWDM), maximizing routing platform capacity, increasing bandwidth across links, and extending reach to more network locations and customers, while eliminating the need for managing external DWDM equipment.

With Juniper’s CORA solution, Telxius will streamline network architecture by consolidating previously segmented IP and optical network layers into a unified system leveraging IPoDWDM. Upon completion, Telxius plans to enhance network reliability for its customers, simplify network operations, and significantly reduce energy consumption.

“This project represents a significant leap forward in enhancing Telxius’ network scalability and capacity with 400G coherent pluggable optics, addressing the needs of our customers in a growing digital economy. Telxius is at the forefront of innovation, ensuring reduced energy consumption and simplified network architecture to deliver an enhanced customer experience. We anticipate various vendor-neutral solutions that could support this architecture, and we are excited to collaborate with Juniper to build a robust foundation for future network expansion,” said Carlos Dasi, CTO of Telxius.

“400G optics is an extremely reliable solution to further enhance Telxius’ infrastructure, enabling customers to benefit from the best possible experience. Telxius leads the way in network innovation with the deployment of Juniper’s PTX and CORA, and Juniper is proud to enable this network transformation. Juniper’s optical solutions offer seamless integration with Juniper’s infrastructure, enabling customers to expand and extend their network based on their business objectives. Designed to last, this network transformation will extend Telxius’ network longevity to sustain its operations,” said Julius Francis, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Juniper Networks.
