FLIR Launches TrafiBot Dual AI Camera to Improve Interurban Traffic Flow and Enhance Road Safety

Teledyne Technologies Unveils TrafiBot Dual AI Multispectral Camera System for Enhanced Interurban Traffic Safety

Teledyne Technologies has launched the TrafiBot Dual AI multispectral camera system, aimed at advancing interurban traffic intelligence. This closed-circuit traffic camera is specifically designed to enhance safety in tunnels and on bridges, where drivers are particularly vulnerable to hidden hazards and rapidly spreading vehicle fires.

The TrafiBot Dual AI features a rapid thermal core that delivers reliable 14-bit early fire detection for road tunnels, along with robust artificial intelligence (AI) that ensures optimal detection performance. It efficiently collects traffic data on interurban roadways without compromising imaging resolution or risking data loss due to bandwidth limitations.

Utilizing three proprietary FLIR AI models simultaneously, the system has been developed and trained using millions of images captured globally. One model identifies and classifies fallen objects, while the other two classify vehicles based on both thermal and visual streams, including unusual items like e-scooters and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

With the integration of FLIR’s patented 3D world tracker, the TrafiBot Dual AI significantly enhances incident detection capabilities. The camera can predict vehicle speed and trajectory as they enter its field of view, even if objects become temporarily obscured. Additionally, it can detect sudden lane changes and wrong-way drivers, providing essential data to traffic managers to improve incident response and reduce false alarms.

The camera takes early fire detection to new heights. By analyzing 14-bit thermal data directly on the device, it leverages 64 times more information, ensuring unparalleled speed and reliability in fire detection while dramatically minimizing false alarms—setting a new standard for early fire detection in traffic tunnels.

“Intelligent traffic management systems have advanced significantly over the past decade, requiring immediate and accurate data to alert first responders, save lives, and facilitate smoother traffic flow,” said Stefaan Pinck, Vice President of Business Development at FLIR. “TrafiBot Dual AI delivers this capability through its unique combination of proprietary AI models, a 3D world tracker, and enhanced fire detection features.”

Gil Marques, President of Tacel Ltd., a leading supplier of advanced traffic management systems in Canada, emphasized FLIR’s unmatched experience: “FLIR has effectively integrated over 30 years of traffic intelligence into its AI algorithms, providing a level of expertise that competitors, reliant on generic datasets, cannot match.”

Adaptable Design for Various Environments

The TrafiBot Dual AI boasts an innovative three-axis rotational design, allowing for flexible installation on diverse roadway infrastructure, including sloped tunnel walls and tight spaces. This design enables the camera to swivel, pan, tilt, and roll without the need for custom adapter plates, simplifying installation and minimizing traffic disruption.

Housed in a durable IP 66/67-rated marine-grade stainless steel casing, the camera is built to endure various weather conditions, including salt air and humidity, as well as high-pressure water blasts from cleaning operations. Its 4K camera features an optical zoom of 6 to 22 mm and a detection range of up to 300 meters (984 feet), providing broader coverage compared to previous FLIR intelligent traffic cameras.

Seamless Software Integration

The TrafiBot Dual AI is designed to integrate with FLIR Cascade, a new software solution that organizes and analyzes data from the camera. This system includes an advanced intelligent incident filtering feature, ensuring that only relevant incidents are presented to traffic operators. If an incident is detected, a short, high-resolution video clip—either in color or thermal—is flagged for immediate review by traffic management teams. The system can also connect with video management systems for live footage access.
