Matternet, a leader in urban drone delivery, has announced its entry into the home delivery market with the launch of the first drone delivery service in Silicon Valley. The company’s technology platform will facilitate ultra-fast, zero-emission deliveries of food and commercial items directly to consumers’ homes.
Having initiated a pilot program on August 30, Matternet is now expanding its services in Mountain View and Sunnyvale. This pilot utilizes a variant of the Matternet M2 Drone Delivery platform, the only drone delivery platform in the United States to receive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Type Certification. The M2 drones fly in controlled airspace over densely populated areas and feature a Tether Drop system that allows them to lower packages directly to customers’ doorsteps, offering a new delivery experience.
“After years of advancing drone delivery in healthcare, we’re thrilled to launch our first home delivery operation in the heart of Silicon Valley,” said Andreas Raptopoulos, Founder and CEO of Matternet. “We’re entering the next phase of scale in drone delivery, creating a new layer of ultra-efficient logistics infrastructure that will become essential for every household.”
The delivery process is fully automated: drones are loaded at a central hub, fly directly to the customer’s home, and safely descend to release the package via the tether. The drones then return to the hub, swap their battery, and pick up a new package in under 60 seconds before taking off for the next delivery.
“The future is finally here—this delivery experience is perfect for the digital age,” Raptopoulos remarked. “It’s so fast, it feels like magic. Every delivery means one less car trip, which reduces congestion in our cities and decreases emissions in the air we breathe.”
Matternet’s drone service provides several benefits, including reduced road congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhanced delivery efficiency through advanced automation—all while maintaining quiet and privacy-respecting operations.
This program sets the stage for a broader rollout as Matternet plans to expand its home delivery platform in collaboration with major logistics partners. Early feedback from local residents has been positive, emphasizing the speed, convenience, and innovative nature of drone delivery.
