CelcomDigi and Borneo Restu Forge Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Digital Innovation in Sarawak

CelcomDigi Berhad (“CelcomDigi”) has entered into a strategic partnership with Sarawak-based telecommunications infrastructure specialist, Borneo Restu Sdn Bhd, to improve high-speed internet access across Sarawak as part of the Point of Presence (PoP) Phase 2 project. This collaboration aims to support Sarawak’s digital transformation by expanding connectivity in suburban and rural areas, with a particular focus on providing better internet access to schools in these regions.

The partnership represents a significant step in the PoP Phase 2 project, which seeks to enhance digital access for communities across Sarawak. Improved connectivity will unlock opportunities for businesses, boost digital innovation, attract investments, create jobs, and contribute to the state’s overall economic and social development.

During the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, CelcomDigi CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi highlighted the importance of the collaboration: “This partnership is crucial for advancing Sarawak’s digital infrastructure. Together with Borneo Restu, we aim to deliver improved digital access that will benefit all Sarawakians, particularly in underserved areas. We are excited about this long-term partnership and the opportunities it will bring to accelerate Sarawak’s digitalisation.”

Ian W Lee, Managing Director of Borneo Restu, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the timely completion of the PoP Phase 2 project by the end of 2025. He emphasized the critical role of Borneo Restu in supporting Sarawak’s digital transformation, saying, “We are eager to work closely with CelcomDigi to enhance the state’s connectivity and contribute to its economic and social progress.”

The Malaysian Ministry of Communications allocated RM3.9 billion for the PoP Phase 2 project, which involves the construction of 3,693 PoP sites near rural schools nationwide. Of this, RM1.08 billion was designated for Sarawak, allowing Borneo Restu to develop 681 PoP sites across the state.

CelcomDigi is also actively involved in other initiatives to enhance Sarawak’s digital landscape. The company is part of the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation’s SMART600 project, which aims to improve rural connectivity. Currently, CelcomDigi provides 4G coverage to 90% of populated areas in Sarawak, with further improvements expected through ongoing network integration and modernization.

In addition to connectivity efforts, CelcomDigi recently held the MY5G SME Digital Workshop in Kuching, empowering 200 local MSMEs with the digital skills needed to thrive in the digital economy. The company also played a key role as the platinum sponsor of SUKMA 2024, showcasing Malaysia’s first live 5G-Advanced (5G-A) broadcast from the event. Through 5G-A powered 360° cameras at Stadium Sarawak, viewers enjoyed an immersive experience via Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, while CelcomDigi achieved the fastest mobile speeds of 30.8Mbps during a live 5G-A trial in Kuching
