In July 2023, Chunghwa Telecom’s near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a leading international climate organization. On August 15, 2023, the company’s long-term Net Zero Targets were also validated by the SBTi, making Chunghwa Telecom the first Taiwanese telecom operator to commit to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045—five years ahead of the global 2050 target.
This validation underscores Chunghwa Telecom’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The company is pursuing a dual strategy of “Technology Carbon Reduction” and “Using Renewable Energy,” involving employees, customers, and business partners in its sustainability initiatives.
In response to the global climate crisis, Chunghwa Telecom has adopted the 1.5°C scenario and committed to the following:
- Overall Net-Zero Target: Achieve net-zero GHG emissions across the entire value chain by 2045.
- Near-Term Targets: Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 (from a 2020 base year) and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 25% (from a 2021 base year).
- Net-Zero Targets: Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 95% by 2040 and Scope 3 emissions by 90% by 2045.
Chunghwa Telecom has also joined global initiatives such as RE100, committing to 100% renewable energy usage by 2040, and EV100, pledging to fully electrify its vehicle fleet by 2030. These efforts are complemented by the company’s actions to improve energy efficiency, build eco-friendly infrastructure, and reduce operational carbon emissions.
In 2023, Chunghwa Telecom achieved significant milestones in renewable energy, with a self-built solar capacity of 5,557 kWp, nearly 20% higher than in 2022. The company also used 73.57 million kWh of green electricity and obtained 73,541 renewable energy certificates (T-RECs), tripling its achievements from the previous year. Additionally, Chunghwa Telecom is driving carbon reduction across its supply chain by collaborating with key suppliers and promoting product carbon footprint reduction.
The company’s sustainability efforts have earned international recognition, including ranking first in the global telecommunications sector in the DJSI-World Index, an A-list rating from CDP for climate action, and inclusion in TIME magazine’s list of the top 2% of the world’s most sustainable companies for 2024. Chunghwa Telecom remains dedicated to its long-term sustainability goals, working closely with partners to drive impactful change.
