Fujitsu Limited and Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 31, marking the commencement of a 2-year strategic partnership. The primary objective of this collaboration is to jointly explore the implementation of a network leveraging the All-Photonics Network (APN) technology, based on the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative in Taiwan.
The envisioned network aims to contribute significantly to the realization of an innovative and sustainable society by delivering a network environment characterized by high capacity, low latency, and low power consumption.
Chunghwa Telecom, recognized as the largest telecommunications carrier in Taiwan, is actively engaged in global partnerships to address sustainability challenges in the network sector. Having joined the IOWN Global Forum in March 2020, in collaboration with Fujitsu, both companies are committed to achieving a network environment that boasts high capacity, low latency, and low power consumption.
As part of the MOU overview and future plans, Fujitsu and Chunghwa Telecom will collaborate on the introduction of APN technology in Taiwan, drawing upon Fujitsu’s expertise in this field. Fujitsu will work alongside Chunghwa Telecom to establish a verification facility for APN technology in Taiwan, leveraging this collaboration as an opportunity to advocate for the adoption of this technology in commercial networks within the country.
Fujitsu, utilizing its experience and knowledge gained in Japan, will actively contribute to formulating and expediting the commercialization of the APN construction plan, tailored to Taiwan’s specific telecommunications landscape. This initiative is geared towards enhancing the development of infrastructure that supports societal needs and people’s daily lives in Taiwan.
Vivek Mahajan, SEVP, CTO and CPO at Fujitsu Limited, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting Fujitsu’s industry-leading APN experience and achievements that are expected to play a pivotal role in improving the network environment, addressing societal issues, and reducing the environmental impact of network operations in Taiwan.
Chih-Hsiung Huang, SEVP & CTO at Chunghwa Telecom, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the significance of this partnership in developing the Open All-Photonic Network. The goal is to enhance optical communication quality for innovative applications such as B5G/6G, AI, and cloud computing, ultimately facilitating early access to the benefits of information and communication services for the society and people of Taiwan.
The collaboration between Fujitsu and Chunghwa Telecom represents a strategic initiative to leverage advanced APN technology, contributing to the establishment of a cutting-edge network infrastructure that aligns with the IOWN initiative’s vision of high-speed, high-capacity communications, and substantial computing resources.
