Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) has announced the launch of Iridium Certus® GMDSS, marking a significant leap in maritime safety, compliance, and communication technology. Built on the robust Iridium Certus platform, this new solution includes essential services such as distress alert, safety voice communication, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI). It also integrates regulated services like Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and the Ship Security Alert System (SSAS).
By incorporating GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS into Iridium Certus terminals, the maritime industry gains access to a comprehensive, reliable, and cost-effective communication solution that enhances fleet safety and security. Leading manufacturers such as Cobham Satcom, Intellian, Lars Thrane, and Thales are set to roll out Iridium Certus 700 and 200 GMDSS solutions in the coming months. This innovation promises to redefine connectivity standards for maritime hybrid networks worldwide.Iridium Communications Inc. has introduced Iridium Certus® GMDSS, a solution that not only offers broadband and midband voice and data capabilities but also delivers comprehensive global safety services across all oceans, including polar regions. The system’s compact, lightweight equipment has no moving parts, making it virtually maintenance-free and easy to install. With its portability and quick setup, it provides a reliable and cost-effective solution that meets critical safety and regulatory requirements.
“When we launched Iridium® GMDSS a few years ago, we disrupted a long-standing monopoly and brought much-needed innovation to this life-saving service,” said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium. “Now, we’ve taken it a step further by creating the most powerful and efficient GMDSS-capable solution, combining multiple functionalities into one terminal.”
Wouter Deknopper, Vice President of Maritime at Iridium, added, “Whether a ship uses GEO or LEO broadband, Iridium Certus GMDSS is the perfect companion for ensuring uninterrupted operations and critical connectivity. This new solution consolidates and simplifies maritime communications while enhancing safety, meeting compliance standards, and supporting ongoing business operations.”
Iridium Certus GMDSS can be used as a standalone solution or as a companion to a vessel’s Ka/Ku-band broadband system. It offers essential safety features required for all SOLAS-class ships, as mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system ensures that vessels can quickly send distress signals, receive vital safety information, and communicate with rescue coordination centers (RCC) in emergencies. Pressing the distress button connects the crew to an RCC in seconds, allowing for rapid assessment and response.
As the maritime industry adapts to evolving environmental, regulatory, and technological challenges, effective communication and safety remain critical. Iridium Certus GMDSS provides fleets worldwide with the peace of mind that their safety, compliance, and connectivity needs are met, offering truly global coverage. It represents the future of maritime safety and communications in an increasingly dynamic industry.
