MTN Group Speeds Up Digital Transformation, Meets African Leaders

MTN Group Chairman, Mcebisi Jonas, and President & CEO, Ralph Mupita, recently convened with leaders from various African nations during the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. Their discussions revolved around key areas crucial for national and continental development, including regulatory alignment, digital infrastructure investment, broadband accessibility, and skills enhancement.

Emphasizing the need for conducive regulatory environments, MTN urges governments to streamline policies to bolster digital infrastructure investment, essential for Africa’s economic advancement. Additionally, MTN collaborates with partners to ensure quality broadband access, fostering a thriving digital economy while supporting skills development to meet the demands of the digital era.

Mupita underscores the significance of such initiatives in nurturing innovation, economic growth, and sustainable development continent-wide, aligning with MTN’s strategic goal of spearheading digital solutions for Africa’s progress.

During the forum, the MTN leadership engaged with prominent figures such as Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Kenyan President William Ruto, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, underlining the transformative potential of digitalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa. However, realizing this potential necessitates strengthening governance, sustaining policy reforms, investing in infrastructure and skills, and navigating geopolitical complexities.

Jonas stresses the importance of prioritizing entrepreneurship and innovation to drive productivity growth, emphasizing the need for partnerships and transparent rules to safeguard them.

MTN Group’s subsidiaries, like MTN Côte d’Ivoire and MTN Rwanda, lead their respective markets, while MTN’s presence extends through various ventures, including a wholesale fiber business and an internet service provider in Kenya. With mobile operations in 17 African countries, MTN Group is dedicated to expanding digital inclusion, aligning with UN objectives for universal broadband access.
