MTN Group hosted a high-level delegation from Nigeria’s National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) at its Johannesburg headquarters. Co-hosted by the SA-Nigeria Business Chamber, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and the Nigerian embassy, the visit was part of NIPSS’ study tour focusing on digital technology, youth empowerment, and job creation in Nigeria.
Led by Amb. Alexander T. Ajayi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigeria High Commission, the delegation included government officials, military representatives, law enforcement personnel, and professional association leaders. The visit strengthened bilateral ties between Nigeria and South Africa, emphasizing collaboration in digital technology for socio-economic development.
Amb. Ajayi expressed gratitude to MTN for hosting the delegation, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships in leveraging digital technology’s potential. Discussions with MTN Group executives, including Enzo Scarcella, focused on MTN’s contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation and economic growth. The delegation also toured MTN’s Technology Innovation Lab to see technological advancements firsthand.
The study tour’s theme, “Digital Economy, Youth Empowerment, and Sustainable Job Creation in Nigeria,” aims to foster dialogue and identify collaboration opportunities for building digital societies. A’isha Umar Mumuni, Chief Digital Officer at MTN Nigeria, reiterated MTN’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and economic growth through connectivity, digital platforms, and expanded financial services.
MTN, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, advocates for harmonized regulations across African nations to support increased digital infrastructure investment. With operations in 18 countries, including MTN Nigeria, which began in 2001 and boasts nearly 78 million subscribers, MTN Group remains dedicated to empowering Nigerian youth and accelerating sustainable development.
