Radisys, a global leader in open telecom solutions, and Ramon.Space, a pioneer in space-resilient computing infrastructure, have announced a groundbreaking partnership to jointly develop cutting-edge space-resilient intellectual property for 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) solutions. This strategic collaboration represents a major advancement in integrating 3GPP-based advanced 5G technologies with space-resilient communication processors.
At the core of this partnership is the integration of Radisys’ 5G NTN Radio Access Network (RAN) software, compliant with Release 17, into Ramon.Space’s space-resilient hardware. This combined solution will enable the development of optimized space-based 5G NTN systems, including the deployment of full 5G gNodeBs (gNBs) in space.
Deploying 5G gNBs in space involves placing advanced RAN nodes on orbiting satellites. These nodes facilitate high-speed, low-latency communication by connecting directly to devices on Earth, at sea, or in the air. This extends the coverage of terrestrial 5G networks, offering seamless global connectivity, including for remote and underserved areas. By integrating Radisys’ Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) 5G gNB software into Ramon.Space’s On-Board Processors (OBPs), the partnership enables flexible RAN split options between space platforms and ground stations. This supports efficient data transfer and robust connectivity for applications such as broadband internet, IoT, disaster recovery, and remote industrial operations.
Key features of this integrated solution include:
- Advanced Integration: Optimized space-based 5G NTN solutions, including full gNBs in space.
- Innovative Architecture: CU and DU hosting on the satellite with flexible RAN split options between space and ground platforms.
- Cost Efficiency: Space-resilient hardware and 3GPP-standardized software reduce the cost of space communications, unlocking new use cases.
- Future-Ready Scalability: Designed for diverse applications, from IoT to broadband, and scalable for higher capacity at more efficient operating points.
- Comprehensive Offering: A joint hardware and software solution tailored for space-borne 5G missions.
