Samsung Unveils First 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM for Next-Gen AI Computing

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leader in advanced memory technology, has announced the development of the industry’s first 24-gigabit (Gb) GDDR7 DRAM. This new memory solution boasts not only the highest capacity but also the fastest speeds, making it ideal for next-generation applications. The 24Gb GDDR7 is currently showcased at the Samsung Booth (#B9) during the 2024 Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit in San Jose, California.

With its impressive capacity and performance, the 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM will be widely utilized in high-performance sectors, including data centers and AI workstations, expanding its use beyond traditional applications in graphics cards, gaming consoles, and autonomous driving.

“After introducing the industry’s first 16Gb GDDR7 last year, Samsung continues to reinforce its technological leadership in the graphics DRAM market,” stated YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics. “We will keep leading this market by developing next-generation products that meet the evolving needs of the AI sector.”

The 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM leverages 5th-generation 10-nanometer (nm)-class technology, achieving a 50% increase in cell density while maintaining the same package size as its predecessor. It employs three-level Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signaling to deliver an industry-leading speed of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps), a 25% improvement over the previous version. Depending on the usage environment, speeds can be further enhanced up to 42.5Gbps.

Power efficiency has also been improved by incorporating technologies previously used in mobile devices into graphics DRAM for the first time. Techniques like clock control management and dual VDD design significantly reduce unnecessary power consumption, resulting in over a 30% enhancement in power efficiency. Additionally, the 24Gb GDDR7 minimizes current leakage using power gating design techniques, boosting operational stability during high-speed operations.

Validation of the 24Gb GDDR7 for next-generation AI computing systems from major GPU customers will commence this year, with plans for commercialization set for early next year.
