Telefónica and Halotech Implement Post-Quantum Encryption in IoT Devices

Telefónica and Halotech Digital Services have unveiled a cutting-edge IoT solution incorporating post-quantum encryption to enhance secure communication in safety-critical environments such as mining, healthcare, and industry. This innovative solution, named TU Quantum Encryption, was developed from the proof of concept (PoC) IoT Quantum Ready project for Halotech AI helmets, specifically applied to the Halo I and Halo III smart devices.

The TU Quantum Encryption solution operates via Kite, Telefónica Tech’s IoT managed connectivity platform, which enables real-time, remote control and monitoring of devices. It ensures secure data transfers bolstered by post-quantum cryptology, significantly enhancing protection against future threats from quantum computing.

The solution aims to provide a superior level of secure communication for smart devices like the Halo I connected helmets and Halo III smart bracelets. Both devices are equipped with advanced features such as GPS, emergency SOS buttons, fall detection, and sensors that measure critical environmental factors like noise level, temperature, humidity, pressure, air quality, and thermal stress—essential for improving safety in demanding work conditions. Telefónica supplies connectivity through low-power, wide-coverage networks like NB-IoT and LTE-M, ensuring reliable service even in hard-to-reach areas.

Telefónica Tech’s Kite platform facilitates real-time monitoring and control of these devices globally. By integrating post-quantum cryptography, the solution adds an extra security layer, safeguarding critical information against potential quantum threats.

This partnership reinforces Telefónica’s commitment to advancing security and technology, while Halotech AI positions itself as a leader in integrating cutting-edge technologies for operational security in critical sectors. The alliance aims not only to protect sensitive information but also to enhance operational performance in ‘tactical operations bubbles,’ where the safety of personnel is paramount.
