TM and Nxera, the regional data centre arm of Singtel’s Digital InfraCo unit, have formed a strategic joint venture to launch advanced data centres in Malaysia, beginning with a state-of-the-art, hyper-connected AI-ready campus in Johor. This collaboration aims to meet the needs of hyperscalers, AI application providers, and enterprises driving digitalization and cloud adoption across the region. Leveraging TM’s extensive domestic network infrastructure and Singtel’s robust subsea cable networks, the partnership promises enhanced global connectivity, lower latency, and superior network reliability.
Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, TM’s Group Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the venture’s significance: “Establishing a hyper-connected AI-ready data centre signifies our ongoing partnership with Singtel, leveraging our strengths to elevate ASEAN as the premier digital hub. With TM’s vast network infrastructure and Malaysia’s largest interconnected DC, we aim to propel high-performance computing and lay a solid foundation for cloud and AI advancements. This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards our vision of becoming a Digital Powerhouse by 2030.”
Bill Chang, CEO of Nxera and Singtel’s Digital InfraCo unit, echoed the sentiment: “We are thrilled to enter Malaysia alongside TM as our strategic partner. This partnership underscores our commitment to leading sustainable, hyper-connected AI-ready data centres in the region, supporting businesses with critical digital infrastructure. Our inaugural data centre campus in Johor, scalable in phases, reflects our agility in meeting market demands. With our combined expertise and strong track record, we aim to deliver one of Malaysia’s most efficient, sustainable, and connectivity-rich data centre facilities.”
Situated in Iskandar Puteri, close to Singapore, the campus will be TM and Nxera’s largest to date, designed to meet the highest standards of reliability, security, and sustainability while offering exceptional local and international connectivity. The proximity to subsea cable links between Singapore and Malaysia positions the data centre to cater effectively to the digitalization needs of both nations.
The initial phase will support 64MW, expandable to 200MW to meet evolving market demands. This high-power density campus will accommodate substantial computing and AI capabilities, including requirements from cloud hyperscalers and GPU-as-a-Service providers. Advanced technologies like liquid cooling will ensure efficient operations for high-power density workloads. The campus will pursue LEED certification, underscoring its commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable practices.
As Malaysia’s leading integrated telco and technology provider, TM will leverage its expertise in network infrastructure to offer tailored wholesale data, connectivity, and platform solutions for local and international markets. TM’s participation in the Asia Link Cable Systems partnership and establishment of an international Cable Landing Station in Johor further strengthens its role in advancing Malaysia’s data centre industry.
Nxera, backed by Singtel and global investment firm KKR, is rapidly expanding its regional footprint with data centres in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. The company’s pipeline capacity is set to exceed 200MW in the next three years, supported by Digital InfraCo’s extensive subsea fibre-optic network across the Asia Pacific region.
In conclusion, the TM-Nxera joint venture represents a significant leap forward in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure landscape, poised to accelerate innovation, entrepreneurship, and business excellence across ASEAN and beyond.
