On October 10, 2024, Ubitus K.K., a leading cloud streaming provider, was chosen for Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) GENIAC Program. This initiative aims to advance the “Post-5G Information and Communication System Infrastructure R&D Project.” As part of this effort, Ubitus will develop a 405B AI large language model (LLM) optimized for tourism and cultural content, which will be made available as open source.
AI-Powered Transformation of Tourism
The six-month project will leverage 256 high-performance NVIDIA H100 GPUs to support Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages. The focus is on delivering AI-driven solutions to the tourism sector, addressing the growing number of international visitors and workers in Japan.
Launched by the Japanese government in February 2024, the “Generative AI Accelerator Challenge (GENIAC)” called for innovative proposals. Ubitus distinguished itself by proposing a solution based on the Llama 3.1 405B LLM, which will be trained on 200 billion words in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. This model will be fine-tuned for tourism-specific tasks, such as question answering, and will incorporate Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology to deliver real-time travel recommendations, cultural insights, and translation services in multiple languages.
In collaboration with Deepreneur, Ubitus will gather data, with Ubitus handling Traditional Chinese and Korean data, while Deepreneur manages Japanese data. To commercialize the model, Ubitus plans to integrate it into services for local governments, transportation systems, and tourism-related applications, enhancing interactions between travelers and local communities.
Open-Source Initiative and Broader Impact
Ubitus is committed to driving global AI innovation and will release the 405B LLM as open source, inviting developers to explore multilingual communication solutions. The model offers a cost-effective alternative to mainstream options like GPT-4o and can be used across industries such as customer service, education, and healthcare, where localized language understanding is crucial.
“We are excited to have the support of the Japanese government,” said Wesley Kuo, CEO of Ubitus. “This initiative highlights our dedication to leading AI innovation in East Asia. By developing this advanced language model, we aim to revolutionize not only tourism but also other sectors that rely on language and cultural understanding.”
This grant marks a significant milestone for Ubitus, reinforcing its position as a leader in cloud technology and AI innovation.
