While completing her senior year at DePaul University in Chicago, Alice Martin, now an associate software engineer at UScellular, sought an employer renowned for its strong workplace culture and steadfast commitment to local communities. What inspired your career path in information technology?
Alice: My older brother, a software test engineer, initially sparked my interest in the field. I graduated from DePaul University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics. Technology’s ever-evolving landscape offers continual learning and fresh opportunities. It’s incredibly motivating to know that technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing countless lives.
Why did you choose to join UScellular?
Alice: I was drawn to a company deeply committed to its employees and the communities it serves. UScellular’s mission to connect people to what matters most deeply resonates with me. My internship with the Enterprise Testing Quality Assurance (ETQA) team introduced me to UScellular’s culture and people. Working alongside skilled developers solidified my decision, and now I’m proud to be part of the ETQA team full-time.
What do you find most rewarding about working at UScellular?
Alice: Recently, I joined the Asian American Network Associate Resource Group board as the lead for membership recruitment and engagement. This role allows me to connect with colleagues across the organization, which is especially valuable in our hybrid work environment. I appreciate meeting fellow associates who contribute their expertise to enrich our workplace culture, supported strongly by UScellular’s commitment to Associate Resource Groups.
Advice for new graduates starting their careers?
Alice: Seek feedback continuously from peers and leaders within your professional network. The early stages of your career are ideal for expanding knowledge and gaining experience.
What do you enjoy outside of work? Any interesting hobbies?
Alice: I enjoy developing gaming websites and exploring new avenues to hone my skills. Outside of tech, I love taking my fluffy 10-month-old puppy, Ray, to the park. A fun fact about me is that I studied Mandarin Chinese for seven years and hope to visit China one day.
