UScellular Expands Network with 10 New Cell Sites Funded by Nebraska Universal Service Fund

UScellular has announced the expansion of its network with the addition of 10 new cell sites, supported by funding from the Nebraska Universal Service Fund. This initiative aims to enhance coverage and service quality across the state, bringing improved connectivity to more residentsUScellular is enhancing its network in Nebraska with the addition of 10 new cell sites in Ayr, Brainard, Cedar Rapids, Edgar, Elmwood, Murray, Newcastle, Niobrara, Ponca, and Tobias. These sites, supported by $5.1 million from the Nebraska Universal Service Fund (NUSF) Wireless Fund Program, aim to improve mobile connectivity across the state.

The new cell sites extend wireless coverage to over 700 square miles, including several state and county highways and park areas. This expansion adds to the more than 500 sites UScellular already operates in Nebraska.

Monique Moore, UScellular’s director of sales and operations for Nebraska, praised the Nebraska Public Service Commission for its commitment to extending connectivity to underserved areas. “At UScellular, we strive to deliver an exceptional customer experience with a fast, reliable network, keeping our customers connected to what matters most. We are excited that more Nebraskans can now benefit from these new towers.”

Since 2010, UScellular has utilized NUSF funding to build or upgrade over 60 towers. Building and maintaining cell towers in rural areas can be significantly more expensive than in urban centers, making such funding crucial for efficient connectivity.

Nebraska Public Service Commission Chair Dan Watermeier commended UScellular’s ongoing contributions, stating, “Through its participation in the NUSF-92 program, UScellular has proven to be a valuable partner in enhancing wireless coverage by constructing mobile towers.”

In addition to these new sites, UScellular is working on five more sites in Beemer, Memphis, Monroe, Naponee, and Nehawaka, with completion expected in late 2025. The company also invested $11.9 million in its Nebraska network in 2023, focusing on network upgrades and 5G modernizations to further improve connectivity and advance its 5G network strategy.
