AT&T* and AST SpaceMobile have solidified their collaboration through a definitive commercial agreement aimed at revolutionizing connectivity. This partnership extends until 2030, marking a significant milestone from their previous collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding. It represents a monumental leap towards enhancing connectivity for both consumers and businesses nationwide.
In a significant move, AST SpaceMobile is set to deliver its inaugural commercial satellites to Cape Canaveral this summer for deployment into low Earth orbit. These initial five satellites will pave the way for commercial service, following several noteworthy milestones achieved in 2023. Among these milestones were industry-first achievements, including the initiation of voice calls, text messaging, and video calls via space directly between everyday smartphones.
The journey towards this groundbreaking partnership began in 2018, and AT&T remains a vital collaborator in this innovative connectivity venture. Chris Sambar, Head of Network for AT&T, will soon join AST SpaceMobile’s board of directors, underscoring AT&T’s commitment to this transformative technology. AT&T will continue its direct involvement in the development, testing, and troubleshooting of this technology, crucial for achieving satellite coverage across the continental U.S.
Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer of AT&T, emphasized the significance of space-based direct-to-mobile technology in complementing and integrating with existing mobile networks. He sees this agreement as a pivotal step in AT&T’s leadership in leveraging emerging satellite technologies to deliver services to consumers, even in previously inaccessible areas.
Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with AT&T, highlighting their joint efforts in unlocking the potential of space-based cellular broadband for everyday smartphones. The aim is to provide seamless and reliable service to consumers and businesses across the continental U.S., revolutionizing connectivity and information access.
This partnership aligns with AT&T’s mission to expand connectivity on America’s largest wireless network, promising to eliminate dead zones and ensure two-way connectivity in various environments. It heralds a future where consumers can enjoy uninterrupted connectivity in wilderness areas, rural highways, and other remote locations nationwide, offering a newfound sense of security and accessibility.
