Axiata Group Berhad has proudly announced that Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, the CEO of Telecommunications Business & Group Executive Director, was honored with the prestigious 2024 GSMA Chairman’s Award at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress.
Established in 1996, the Chairman’s Award is considered the GSMA’s highest recognition, acknowledging exceptional contributions by individuals and organizations to the global advancement of mobile communications.
Axiata’s operating companies have consistently been at the forefront of driving the impact and cutting-edge capabilities of mobile communications in Asia. Teams from across the Axiata Group have actively participated in various strategic initiatives of the GSMA regionally and globally. Notably, Axiata Group has taken a leading role in advancing the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative in the region.
As one of Asia’s largest telecommunications groups, Axiata operates across ASEAN and South Asia, serving over 170 million subscribers. Dr. Hans, in his role as the CEO of Telecommunications Business, oversees Axiata’s Digital Telecommunications Operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. His responsibilities also extend to the Group’s Enterprise and International Businesses, along with Axiata’s software and digital transformation unit, Axiata Digital Labs (ADL). Dr. Hans represents the Axiata Group on the Board of the GSMA and previously served as the Chairman of GSM Asia Pacific, receiving the “Outstanding Contribution to the Asian Mobile Industry” Award in 2016.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya expressed humility, stating, “I am truly humbled to receive the GSMA Chairman’s Award.
