CelcomDigi and SES Partner to Expand MEO Satellite Connectivity in Malaysia

CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and SES, a leading provider of content connectivity satellite solutions, have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership aimed at exploring satellite connectivity solutions in Malaysia. The collaboration will leverage SES’s Medium-Earth-Orbit (MEO) and Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit (GEO) satellites to deliver enhanced services for businesses and communities.

As part of the agreement, CelcomDigi and its subsidiaries will work closely with SES to investigate the creation of a local gateway for Satellite Communication (SatCom) services within Malaysia. The partnership will explore the integration of SES’s GEO and MEO satellites with CelcomDigi’s existing infrastructure, including facilities operated by Celcom Timur (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, to offer enterprise-grade satellite connectivity. This connectivity is expected to deliver high throughput, low latency, and a committed service level agreement (SLA).

SES, boasting ownership and operation of a total of 70 satellites, with 26 dedicated to MEO, provides high-performance connectivity services globally from an orbit 8,000 km above Earth. CelcomDigi aims to investigate the delivery of connectivity services like 4G, 5G, SDWAN, and managed Wi-Fi through SES’s advanced satellite technology.

The MoU was formalized at the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Spain, with the signing ceremony attended by key figures such as Datuk Idham Nawawi, CEO of CelcomDigi, Nadine Allen, Global Head of Enterprise & Cloud of SES, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din, Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and YM Tengku Dato’ Sri Azmil Zahruddin, Chair of the Board at CelcomDigi.

Datuk Idham Nawawi, CEO of CelcomDigi, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the potential to enhance 4G LTE and 5G connectivity services for businesses and communities in Malaysia. He reiterated CelcomDigi’s commitment to providing reliable services and a consistent experience on their extensive and high-speed network nationwide.

Nadine Allen, Global Head of Enterprise & Cloud of SES, shared her excitement about the MoU, highlighting the joint effort to explore opportunities for high-speed connectivity and reliable network access. In the digital era, connectivity is crucial, and the collaboration aims to connect enterprises and communities even in the most remote parts of Malaysia.
