Murata Introduces World’s Tiniest 0402M Low-Loss Ceramic Capacitor (100V)

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 6981), referred to here as the “Company,” has successfully developed the world’s smallest 0402M-sized (0.4 x 0.2 mm) low-loss multilayer ceramic capacitor with a rated voltage of 100V. Commencing mass production in February 2024, this innovative product is primarily aimed at wireless communication modules, addressing the increasing demand for compact components due to the rising popularity of 5G technology.

In response to the growing adoption of 5G and the associated need for multiple transmitters and receivers in wireless communication circuit modules, Murata leveraged its distinctive thin-layer molding technology, rooted in the atomization and uniformity of ceramic and electrode materials, combined with high-precision lamination technology. This approach resulted in the creation of an ultra-small chip multilayer ceramic capacitor with dimensions of 0.4mm x 0.2mm, supporting a rated voltage of 100V.

Compared to the conventional 0603M-sized product, this advancement represents a remarkable reduction in size, approximately 35% in terms of mounting area and approximately 55% in terms of volume. This achievement significantly contributes to the miniaturization of wireless communication modules, addressing the industry’s need for smaller components.

Furthermore, Murata’s capacitor boasts unique features, including high voltage resistance, making it the first in the world to achieve a rating of 100V in the 0402M size. The product is ideal for applications requiring reduced component mounting space, contributing to the downsizing of RF modules. Additionally, it is guaranteed at 150℃, enabling close proximity to power semiconductors.

The capacitor’s performance extends to achieving HiQ and low ESR in VHF, UHF, microwave, and higher frequency bands. It is also compatible with narrow capacity deviation, ensuring reliable and consistent performance. The main specifications of the product, named GJM022(5G,5C)2A(R20-220), include a size of 0.4mm x 0.2mm x 0.2mm, capacitance ranging from 0.2pF to 22pF, and compatibility with X8G characteristics (MURATA) and C0G characteristics (EIA) in terms of temperature characteristics.

As part of Murata’s commitment to innovation, the company plans to continue supporting high-temperature guarantees, expand rated voltages, and diversify its product lineup to meet evolving market needs. The goal is to further contribute to the miniaturization and diversification of electronic devices, all while minimizing material and energy consumption during production.
